💫 A complex restoration on a magnificent fan … Let me explain!

The leaf of this fan had multiple tears right through its central illustration. This was due to its starched primer and gouache paint, which stiffened it enormously. The folds become brittle, and give way as soon as the fan is opened or closed.

For greater discretion, the tears have been reinforced on the reverse. The presence of a spine sheet (lining) made the operation more delicate: we had to go under it to reach the tears.

To make matters worse, care had to be taken not to stiffen the sheet any further, so that it could be opened and closed without tension…
The reinforcement had to be as thin as possible, too, so as not to add thickness to the fan.

Finally, color retouching was carried out where necessary to make all this as unobtrusive as possible.

A big challenge, about fifteen hours of work, but such a satisfying result! Don’t you think? ❤️
